I'm a fully qualified, passionate English teacher with over 20 years' experience of teaching in schools, colleges and with private providers.
After leaving school in 1994, I completed a TEFL qualification and spent some time teaching abroad as a GAP student; I then graduated from Birmingham University with first class honours in 1998 (English/History). I spent some time working in homeless hostels after university, before completing my PGCE in 2002; I then taught at Abertillery comprehensive for eight years, teaching Humanities and Drama at KS3 as well as English and History to GCSE level. I took on the role of Essential Skills/ Literacy co-ordinator in 2008. Recently, I have worked at Rhymney, Cardiff and the Vale Colleges and in the community teaching Essential Skills (Literacy) and GCSE English.
More recently, I have worked at a SEMH school in Bristol teaching English and Humanities to 11-16 year olds. I also work as an examiner/moderator for various exam boards, including the WJEC, and I write Functional Skills Exams for Pearson. I have three children, aged 19, 18 and 15 who have also developed my skills in working with children and teenagers!
I began tutoring in 2011, and have worked with a wide range of clients since then, from primary level to adult learners, including TESOL students (I am Trinity Cert TESOL qualified). I have detailed knowledge of current curriculum requirements, gained from my examining /moderating work alongside my teaching experience, including GCSE and A-Level, as well as the Adult Literacy Core Curriculum. I am comfortable working in a variety of environments in person or online.
I aim to tailor my approach to each individual, seeking to make tutees as comfortable and relaxed as possible, and aiming to assess their needs on an individual basis. I draw on over 20 years' teaching experience to provide suitably differentiated learning materials and a variety of learning activities to meet each individual's needs.
For online teaching I tend to use Zoom / Google Classroom but I am capable and confident in adapting to new technologies according to clients' wishes. I have significant SEN/ALN experience developed through my work in EBD and SEMH schools over the last few years and I enjoy developing my practices in this area.
