I have been working as a private tutor for many years and also do A Level examining for AQA. I enjoy helping students fulfil their potential or even exceed what they believe they are capable of. I am friendly, approachable and encouraging, and will always go the extra mile for my students.
Until recently, I was Head of Sociology at a secondary school in Hertfordshire, where I taught for many years. I previously worked at a couple of grammar schools in Buckinghamshire teaching A Level Sociology, using both AQA and OCR exam boards. I have a PhD in Sociology so I am able to teach undergraduates too.
I have provided individual tuition for many undergraduate, and A level students, who have achieved considerable success. The vast majority of students I have taught A Level Sociology to have attained A or A*. Many of my students have also had educational needs such as dyslexia, ADHD and autism.
My approach depends entirely upon the student's needs and the purpose of the tuition. If tuition is needed to ensure a good exam result then the focus would be upon developing the required skills and knowledge base. If there are specific weaknesses that the student feels need addressing, then work would focus around those to a greater extent. If it is background subject knowledge and confidence-building that is needed, then work would be more generalised and less geared around exam board requirements. Undergraduate students tend to need help with specific essays or dissertation writing, usually having problems with structuring them. These students tend to come on a more ad hoc basis depending on university deadlines, rather than weekly tuition.
