As teacher of English, with over a decade of teaching experience, I have a broad knowledge of literature. I have marked the National 5 and Higher English SQA exam papers and have a secure understanding of the standards pupils are required to meet to secure a high grade.
I am based in Blantyre, Lanarkshire, and am willing to travel locally. Travel outside the local area can be arranged, if a nominal payment is made to cover the cost of fuel.

Tutoring Experience

I have been teaching National and Higher English for 11 years, and I have also been tutoring for 5 years.

I develop an awareness of my learners' individual skills and plan sessions that develop these to prepare learners for their end of year exams.

English is a skills based subject, and success will only be achieved if a pupil consistently works to develop these through the year. It is important to realise that tutoring sessions are only effective if a student is willing to engage and complete tasks to the best of their ability.

Tutoring Approach

The English course award is made up of three course elements:
- Reading for Understanding, Analysis and Evaluation (30% of course award)
- Critical Reading (40% of course award - Critical Essay and Scottish Set Text)
- Folio (30% of course award)

I begin by focusing on the RUAE aspect of the course - this can be a tricky area for a lot of pupils. I believe that focusing on this early in the academic year provides a greater amount of time for skills to develop. I then provide resources to enhance and consolodate pupils' understanding of the literature aspect of the course. We will focus on the Scottish Set Text paper, and we will focus on Critical Essay writing skills.

I can help pupils consider appropriate folio topics, and can provide additional teaching on effective techniques they could include to enhance their own writing.
