I am now fully booked for 1:1 sessions after school. I do have a waiting list if you would like to be added to that. I have availability during the school day (Monday to Friday) but expect those sessions to be fully booked within the next few weeks. I also run a small online group dedicated to English Language GCSE on Sundays from 6-7, which costs £25. Please message me for details.
I have taught English in secondary schools for 30 years and I have been a full-time tutor for an additional 2 years, so I have considerable experience across all key stages. I have an affinity with young people and believe that the key to increasing competency is as much to do with confidence as it is to do with skills.
When I'm not teaching English, I am parenting my own three children (aged 16, 20, and 24). I enjoy cooking meals for my perpetually unimpressed offspring, travelling as far and as often as my finances allow, and reading a good book in the sunshine.
I have dedicated my whole career to teaching English and I am still passionate about my subject with three decades spent in classrooms. I have held various managerial positions within English departments, including being lead teacher for delivering and co-ordinating A Level Language and A Level Literature in my last school.
I can offer preparatory tuition in English for year 6 students before they begin secondary school and preparation for SATs.
I have taught years 7 to 13 throughout my career.
I have taught OCR, Edexcel, and AQA GCSE and have tutored for the Edexcel iGCSE and Pearson 2.0. I am familiar with all of the set texts for GCSE, having taught them all numerous times to students with a range of abilities.
My A Level teaching experience is vast as I have taught English Language, English Language and Literature Combined, and English Literature. I have taught WJEC, AQA and OCR A Levels and was the co-ordinator for these A Levels for many years.
I have tutored students who aren’t in mainstream education, SEND students and EAL students. I am flexible in my approach and work to meet the needs of the individual. I am available during the day to tutor those students who are home-educated or are in need of additional tuition outside school hours.
I have a 2:1 Honours Degree in English Language and Literature, and a PGCE in English and Drama from the University of Warwick.
I believe in making the curriculum content and examination process accessible to students of all levels of ability. Fostering a positive relationship is crucial when helping a student achieve their potential. Humour, patience, and a genuine enthusiasm for the subject are integral components of my methods.
I have a particular affinity with teenagers and having three children of my own has helped me to gain an invaluable insight into the challenges and anxieties many students face in education today. My aim, as a tutor, is to respond to the student’s academic needs in a nurturing, encouraging manner so that their confidence increases, and they are not afraid to make mistakes. We learn best by being allowed to make mistakes and having someone there to guide us.
I don’t have a one-size-fits-all approach and I tailor my tuition to meet the needs of the individual in front of me. Some students need exam practices and detailed feedback, some require course-content revision, and some need a combination of both. My experience means that I can respond to a student’s changing needs immediately, and I never need to adhere to a rigid programme of study. Every lesson will be bespoke.
