Joshua

Hello, my name is Josh and I am a final year medical student studying at Imperial College London. I achieved A*A*A*A* in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, and my EPQ during my A-Level studies, which opened the door for me to receive the prestigious Imperial Presidential Scholarship and to achieve distinction in my second and fourth year of medical school.

I am passionate about helping students achieve their academic goals and find it immensely rewarding to see them succeed. Let's work together to unlock your full potential and achieve your dreams!

Tutoring Experience

For the past two years, I have been providing exceptional tutoring services for chemistry and biology GCSE and A level. I strongly believe in a personalised approach, tailoring each session to the unique needs of my students, and have delivered over 1200 hours of tuition both in person and online. To further enhance the learning experience, I incorporate various technological methods into my teaching and use socratic methods to strengthen each student's overall understanding, which students have found immensely useful.

I have also had the experience of helping with the annual Imperial medical school interviews as well as various workshops that different societies at the university run that help students from different backgrounds get into a career in medicine. This has given me a deep understanding of the application cycle and enabled me to provide valuable insights and guidance to students who are considering this pathway.

Tutoring Approach

At the start of every session, I will explain the topic that the student has requested using many methods. One of my favourites is through drawing. Research in 2014 by Shmeck et al. found the profound effect of drawing when learning about scientific information.

Maybe unconventional, rather than having the tutor talk for the entire session, I think that once I have explained the concepts to the students, I want the students to teach me using simple language. This principle is based on Albert Einstein ‘If you can’t explain it to a six-year old, you don’t understand it yourself’. Professor Dunlosky of Kent State University, through evaluating different revision strategies, found that the most effective way to engage students was practice tests and spaced repetition. Applying his wide-used method, after I feel that my tutee has a solid grasp on the topic, I will give them relevant past paper questions. In GCSEs and A levels, the key is to use mark schemes and identifying the words and phrases that they are looking for.

Through the implementation of these techniques into my learning for my A levels (in addition to many more which I will discuss with the students), I found the optimum way to study for my A levels achieving one of the top marks in the country for Chemistry (94%) and overall scoring an average of 85% from all three A-levels. This year, I used these techniques again when I took the US Medical Licensing Exam and was able to achieve in the top 1% of test takers.
