Electronics / Electronic Engineering and Computer Studies / I.T. Tuition in Eastleigh

Hi, I’m Josh, a Principal Teaching Fellow at the University of Southampton, specialising in Electronics and Electrical Engineering. With over nine years of teaching experience in Higher and Further Education, I’ve guided students through subjects like programming, computer science, maths, and electronic systems. My programming expertise spans C++, C, Visual Basic, Python, and Matlab, and I also support learners in ICT office skills and STEM outreach initiatives.

I completed my Ph.D. in Electronic Engineering at the University of Kent in 2018, focusing on biometric systems and human-factor performance issues in technologies like facial recognition and fingerprint interaction.

Teaching is my passion, and I’ve worked with diverse learners in classrooms, camps, and community settings. Beyond academics, I enjoy outdoor adventures, from hiking and snowboarding to running and weightlifting. I’m also a proud dog dad and love exploring the world with my two pups.

Friendly, approachable, and dedicated to student welfare, I’m here to help you succeed while sharing a love for learning and discovery.

Tutoring Experience

I’ve been privately tutoring students of all ages and backgrounds for over a decade, helping many achieve top grades in Computer Science, Engineering, and Mathematics. While most of my current students are GCSE and IGCSE learners, I’m well-versed in various exam boards and also support university students in programming languages like Python, C++, and Visual Basic.

Currently, I’m a Principal Teaching Fellow at the University of Southampton, with over seven years of teaching experience in Higher Education. Previously, I lectured in Electronics Engineering at the University of Portsmouth and worked as a Graduate Teaching Assistant at the University of Kent.

During my Ph.D. studies at Kent, I tutored A-Level Mathematics, Physics, and IT as an Academic Ambassador, supporting sixth-form students across the Kent area through programs like Step Up, which encourages university applications.

My teaching journey began while I was a student at Norton Knatchbull Boys Grammar School, where I tutored younger pupils for the 11+ exam in Mathematics and reasoning tests. Since then, I’ve continued to provide tailored tutoring, both online and in-person, to help students achieve their academic goals.

Tutoring Approach

My goal is to help students become independent, confident learners while ensuring they feel fully supported throughout their journey. I believe in combining clear worked examples with a visual and interactive approach to learning, tailored to each student’s unique needs.

In Computer Science, especially programming, I challenge students with a variety of examples, encouraging them to experiment and apply their knowledge. This builds confidence and problem-solving skills. For maths and science subjects, I focus on practicing exam-style questions, identifying and addressing specific areas of difficulty as they arise.

By adapting my methods to suit each individual, I aim to create a supportive environment where students feel empowered to take ownership of their learning and achieve their best.
