My name is Jireh and I am a tutor that mainly specialises in science and maths with over 1000 hours of experience. I have Masters degree from Imperial College London in Chemistry.
I love science and think it a real shame when I hear people talk of bad memories of their science lessons in school. This is the main reason I want to get involved in tutoring because I believe that I can make a real difference and pass on some of my passion to students who may not 'get science'. One particular issue with which I am particularly concerned is the shortage of women in science, technology, engineering and maths. Hopefully my efforts will change students' minds about the field and it really is my dream to see more people, from all backgrounds, getting involved in these wonderfully interesting subjects.
If you have any questions feel free to get in touch, I would love to answer any queries!
I've been tutoring for 8 years now, having completed over 1000 hours of private tuition. In previous years I have helped students bump their grades from Ds to As. In addition, I've had a wealth of experience teaching in different voluntary schemes and community programmes.
These include teaching a year 6 pupil numeracy and reading at an under-performing primary school mentoring scheme during my A levels, teaching piano to complete beginners, and helping as a teaching assistant at a community Chinese school. I found these all to be rewarding experiences because I enjoy the process of helping others improve and learn. In all my time teaching I have worked with students from many different backgrounds, adapting my style to their different needs.
In total I have had over 7 years worth of teaching experience in various environments and I am certain that I can quickly adapt and give the best that I have to my students.
I think it of utmost importance that children have strong role models in those that teach them, since it is in these schooling years that a pupil's experience shapes the adult they become. This is my main consideration when tutoring students as I recognise that my example has a profound effect on their attitude, behaviour and even perceptions of the world around them. I strive to be a role model to my students as I understand the difference a good teacher has on a young person's life having experienced it myself.
I keep an open environment in which any and all feedback is welcome. If a student is bored or confused by the way I teach, I encourage them to voice their opinions so that I can change my approach. This results in an effective method of teaching and learning. After all, everyone learns in different ways, therefore I try my best to avoid wasting time and money by doubling down on a method that is not getting through.
Lessons will be led by the student and I will try to focus on their weakest areas within a subject. The lessons will involve going through the concepts and ideas from first principles - things the student should know at a basic level. Once the student is comfortable with the concept I will walk them through exam questions that I have selected in order to test their newfound understanding. This will highlight anything that is still unclear, allowing me to identify how I must change my approach and help the student. I will set work to be done for future sessions and will mark any work submitted to me. This allows me to understand the student's exam technique and give them advice on ways to improve.
My teaching method relies on communication between the student and the tutor. This goes both ways and it is important that both are honest and value each others' opinions. Seeing as this is my first private tutoring experience I welcome all feedback and am eager to learn how I can improve so that I can provide the best for my students.
