Hello. My name is Janette. I’m a Cambridge University graduate, fully qualified teacher and ex Deputy Head with 20 years experience of teaching English and French in secondary schools. I’m a warm and encouraging tutor who aims to build students’ confidence in their abilities. I love teaching English and I like kids (even teenagers!) so I make learning fun but with a clear focus on progress towards exam criteria. I offer lessons in my home in Central TW or online using a shared whiteboard and video-conferencing platform.
I have taught in 3 London secondary schools, teaching students across the ability range. I am also an examiner for the new English Language GCSE so am very knowledgeable about the 1-9 exam criteria. I have been working full time as a professional tutor for 9 years.
Last year I helped students achieve A* in English Lit A-Level, Grade 9s in GCSE Language and Literature and entrance to Eton, Sevenoaks School, Tonbridge School, Oxford High Prep and Kent Grammar Schools including Tonbridge Grammar School and Skinners. I am happy to tutor students for , A-level English Lit, GCSE Lang & Lit, 11+/7+ and Common Entrance pre-tests. (11+ English and Verbal Reasoning only) A- Level Literature possible dependent on texts.
My approach is to get to understand each individual student’s strengths and weaknesses and the level of their current understanding so I can plan a tailored programme for him or her to ensure rapid progress from week to week. Depending on parents’ or students’ wishes I will also set homework to be completed between tutorials to reinforce skills taught in sessions.
I enjoy working with all kinds of students, those who find English tricky for whatever reason and high fliers who need stretching and guidance to realise their full potential. I particularly enjoy teaching A-level and IB English and prepare intensively for these lessons by reading all relevant texts and up to date critical views on the authors being studied so I can complement the work students do in their school lessons.
