Janet

Hi, my name is Janet, I have a PhD in Chemistry from MIT, and an Upper Second Class Honours Bachelors degree and a Masters of Research, both in Chemistry from Imperial College London.

I am very approachable, patient and most of all, passionate about Science and Maths.

I know what it feels like to struggle with these subjects at school (They aren't easy!). Sometimes simply being taught in a different way, by a different person really helps a student to understand a subject or topic they may be finding difficult.

I aim to provide a relaxed study environment in which students can work at their own pace and develop an interest and appreciation for their subject.

Tutoring Experience

Asides from tutoring over 15 A-level (Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics) students in the past; my previous teaching experience includes:

Helping in a GCSE maths class in my school
Tutoring 2 students in GCSE and AS Chemistry, Biology and Maths throughout my A2 level year
Tutoring several GCSE and A-Level students through my time at university
Mentoring, training, teaching undergraduate students in Chemistry (lectures and lab courses) during my PhD

Tutoring Approach

For students studying for GCSEs or A-Levels, I like to provide them with their course's specification.
This will make sure that they understand everything that they need to know for their exams by:
'Crossing Off' the topics in which they are confident to be tested on and highlighting the topics in which they need to improve.
I feel it is important not to just 'teach to test' but also gain an understanding of the bigger picture of science and how the separate subjects link together. For example, Chemistry plays a big part in all biological concepts and it is important to understand basics in chemistry in order to fully understand biology. The same can be said for Maths in Chemistry.

I can also offer advice for (Year 10/11) students choosing their A-level options; what combinations will open the most doors for them in terms of applying to university.

I really encourage my students to ask questions and verbally discuss their subject; I feel it is the most effective way to learn.
