My experience with guitar and tutoring is exemplified by 9 years of working as a performing guitarist and 6 years of freelance guitar tutoring. I have a passion for the instrument as well as a desire to help others to demystify its functionality. I honed my skill as a professional through studying guitar in Higher Education, as well as performing around Scotland’s indie band and function band circuit for the last 5 years, preceded by 4 years of performing in Germany.
My passion for teaching guitar, and music in general, is best presented by my 1-year post as a theory tutor at the Edinburgh Napier University, private tuition for students over the last 3 years and my most recently release of a guitar teaching book “Tapping Discovered”.
I consider it vital to understand and tailor the lessons to the goals of the student and their preferred learning style. With every student I start of by discussing what they like to listen to and how they would like to play/sound. I then construct a lesson plan and using this information, made up of fun play-alongs mixed with technical exercises. This fuses theory and practice together but doesn’t include almost any of passive listening to the tutor – the student discovers the instrument through their own playing. Theory is included in my lessons, but I always teach this through practical examples, never theory alone; I find this can be often very disengaging and quite frankly uninteresting for them.
