Hi, I'm Jamilah and I am a part-time maths tutor. I've loved maths from a young age and my interest in tutoring began while I was completing my Bachelors in Economics. With compulsory Maths modules often being taught in a specific, lecture-style way that is often not suited to all students, I valued my tutor immensely. I truly enjoy working with my students & adapting different topics to their learning styles.
I have been working with kids and tutoring students part-time over the last 10 years. I primarily work with students from year 5 to year 9.
I worked in banking for 5 years where Maths was required daily and was a trusted mentor and teacher to interns & incoming graduates. I have also worked with kids of all ages over the last 10 years, holding support sessions for students who needed some extra help - either due to significant knowledge gaps or additional needs that lead to some extra support being needed.
I believe that every student if different and the teaching approach needs to be altered as such. When it comes to Maths, it's easy for students to feel helpless with initial small knowledge gaps compounding over time. This can lead to students feeling behind and lacking confidence in the subject. My approach is to encourage & support students by leading them through the course at a pace that suits them (and making sure that we tackle those problem topics in detail). I especially enjoy working with students who lack confidence and need the initial support to help them work towards their goals.
I also like to ensure that students understand the importance of consistent work rather than doing a high volume of work in a short space of time. I believe that there is often the issue that students don't know how or what to study. I work with my students to develop detailed study plans during the run up to exams & help them to begin feeling confident in making their own plans.
