Hi there, thank you for checking out my profile. I teach maths and English to children from Year 1 up to Year 8, as well as verbal reasoning in Years 4 and 5. Though I very much enjoy teaching children of all ages, at any given time at least half of my students will be focused on passing their Key Stage 2 or 11+ exams, so successfully preparing them for those is very much my specialty.
I have been tutoring full time, 7 days a week since February 2013. Yep, longer than most. In that time I have mentored well over 300 students, 1-on-1 at their homes - some for as little as a few months, some for as long as 5 years. It's those long-term appointments that really make this a great job. There's nothing like being with children on their journey as they grow up, becoming more academically able and confident by the year. By the time they get too smart for me to impart any more knowledge to, I'll know I've set them on a path to academic excellence way past my lessons with them.
For most of my students, I will use the Bond series of maths, English and verbal reasoning text books to assess where the gaps in their learning are. I will then go off-book to teach them everything they need to know about each particular sub-topic. This approach has served me well for over a decade, as it allows my lessons to be catered to my student's individual strengths and weaknesses, rather than being a set weekly programme. This approach has been key to me helping my students to excel in their Key Stage 2 and (optional) 11+ exams, as well as helping to boost their self-condidence and work ethic (which is often what makes the biggest difference to them long-term). For English, I also put a big emphasis on creative writing, as I believe there is no better way to develop exceptional written language skills. My teaching style is usually quite chatty and informal, as I make it a priority to make my student's learning enjoyable wherever possible.
