I am passionate about education. I believe that the tutor has to teach to the learning style of the tutee. I have a calm, patient approach. I specialise in teaching those who find learning a challenge. I have been a private tutor for 20 years and started off by helping the children of friends. I believe that there are enormous benefits to the 1:1 approach that tutoring offers. Each learner is able to have the undivided attention of the tutor, rather than having up to 1/30th of the teacher's attention.
I have a keen interest in many different things. I watch, coach and play rugby and cricket. I love music and play the guitar. I have a burgeoning interest in falconry. I have lived in France and am a Francophile and also enjoy spending time on the water. I also work for the Coastguard.
I am an experienced teacher and tutor; I have taught in schools for 15 years and been a tutor for 20 years I have taught English, French and Maths to GCSE and am familiar with Edexcel, AQA and IGCSE exam boards. I have experience and success in preparing children for the 11+ test for Grammar Schools. This has been with a particular focus on the CEM style entrance exams that most Grammar Schools use.
I have successfully prepared children for 7+, 11+, ISEB 13+ Common Entrance and Scholarship in the Independent Sector.
I teach adults functional skills, with a focus on the English and Maths components. I have also prepared adults for GCSE Maths and have a proven track record of this.
Overall I am a qualified teacher with a depth of experience and a high level of success.
In the Summer of 2016 all of my English GCSE students achieved the grades that they wanted. My GCSE Maths students achieved A's and A*'s.
Patience, empathy and calmness are the most important attributes of any good tutor. I constantly strive to subscribe to these attributes. I put the tutee at the heart of the learning process and will always adapt my teaching style to accommodate the needs and learning style of the tutee.
I like the environment to be relaxed yet purposeful and to ensure that the learning process is fun, empathetic and industrious. If the tutees feel relaxed and look forward to their sessions, then they are likely to get the maximum benefit from the learning experience.
I love teaching and I particularly enjoy it when the learner has that "light bulb moment" and everything suddenly becomes clearer or they understand something that they found confusing.
