Isabella

Isabella

Latin and Greek (Ancient) Teacher in Petersfield

Isabella has studied Latin for fifteen years and Ancient Greek for eleven years. Through an intimate knowledge of these languages, Isabella found beautiful pieces of literature hiding in Ancient alphabets. In 2022, she earned a Bachelor's degree in Classics from the University of Edinburgh. Her dissertation explored the philosophical-satire 'True Histories', applying post-structuralist theories of authorship, narratology, and representation. After graduating, she made the leap to New York, where she has lived for the past year and a half. In January 2025, Isabella completed her Master's degree in Classics at New York University, with a 3.95 GPA. She is currently preparing her PhD applications, where she hopes to research Greek Tragedy, intersected with Greek Sculpture and contemporary Literary Theory.

Tutoring Experience

During her undergraduate degree, Isabella worked part time as a Tutor throughout the UK. After graduating from her Master's degree, Isabella worked as a full time tutor, based in New York City. She taught a variety of clients at many ages and abilities, from Primary School students to Undergraduates to Retirees looking to learn an Ancient Language from scratch. Now that she has moved back to the UK, Isabella would love to continue to use her teaching skills.

Tutoring Approach

In terms of pedagogical practice, she prides herself on being a personable and caring teacher with a diligent and strict method. She does not heavily paraphrase; She wants her students to possess a thorough intellectual understanding of these languages. However, this does not mean that her lessons are too dense nor complex: she takes the time to carefully explain each new concept, have many exercises prepared in varying degrees of difficulty, and can quickly adapt the sessions to fit the student’s learning speed and aptitude. Latin and Ancient Greek are not easy languages, but she firmly believes that anybody can learn them with the right instruction.

This method has seen strong results. She has taught both Ancient Greek and Latin from complete scratch, She has had a student rise from a C to an A grade, and has received constant positive feedback.
