I have an M. Phil in English from the University of Glasgow and I am continuing my research on Shakespeare. Publications include 'India and the Golden Age in A Midsummer Night's Dream', in Shakespeare Survey 65 (Cambridge, 2012), and 'The Merchant of Venice, III.II.99', in Notes and Queries Vol. 61 (Oxford, 2014).

Tutoring Experience

I have been an English tutor since the 1990s and have tutored at all levels, from Primary School to SQA National 5/ GCSE, Higher and Advanced Higher/ A-level, to University level and international students for the IELTS exams.

I have extensive experience tutoring for the SQA/ AQA exams, and I like to focus on the main skills: Close Reading Practice, Critical Essay Writing Practice, Planning the Discursive Essay, the Personal or Reflective Essay. Creative writing. The Scottish Text. Study Skills. Transformation.

Drama: Shakespeare: Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth, Othello, King Lear, Hamlet, The Merchant of Venice, Julius Caesar, Much Ado about Nothing -- any Shakespeare play.

Arthur Miller: The Crucible, Death of a Salesman, All My Sons, A View from the Bridge. Any Tennessee Williams play, including A Streetcar Named Desire and The Glass Menagerie. Sailmaker. Tally's Blood. Men Should Weep (Ena Lamont Stewart). An Inspector Calls (J B Priestley). A Man for All Seasons.

Poetry: Carol Ann Duffy, Liz Lochhead, Edwin Morgan, Robert Burns, Norman MacCaig -- all six poems set by the SQA. John Donne, Byron, Shelley, Browning, Hardy, Wilfred Owen -- all the main poetry set for GCSE/ AQA. I am especially familiar with the main poetry study guides, including "War and Conflict", "Love and Relationships" and "Unseen Poetry" (AQA).
