I recently graduated with first class honors in Mathematics. During my degree, I completed a module on the learning and teaching of Mathematics. This reinforced what I had discovered even back in my GCSE and A-Level years - when I would often find myself seated next to someone struggling to grasp concepts that came easily to me. I would instinctively try to help by breaking things down and explaining them step-by-step. Through these experiences, I learned that truly understanding a subject does not automatically make you an effective teacher of that material. Each student comes in with their own gaps in knowledge and preferred learning styles. My interest is not just in Mathematics itself, but in making it accessible. My goal is to meet students where they are and guide them in Maths competency in a way that works for them. I look forward to sharing my enthusiasm for this field while supporting students at their own pace.
I have experience tutoring GCSE students one-on-one. One student I worked with was ready to give up on maths after repeatedly getting frustrated when concepts weren't clicking. Together we broke things down step-by-step until he built his confidence back up and re-engaged with the subject.
I also spent several years tutoring an 11 year old with severe learning disabilities. When we began he was unable to do basic addition or remember answers, read, or write. Through tailored lessons focused on his needs, I helped significantly improve his numeracy and literacy skills, bringing him closer to the level of his peers. Seeing his growth showed me how impactful patient, individualized teaching can be. I worked closely with his mother and helped place him in a special needs school better suited to support his continued progress.
I find great meaning in helping students overcome challenges and experience academic success.
I get to know each student's learning style and design lessons that work for them. Some students need more repetition, some thrive on problem-solving, and some learn best through discussions.
Building confidence is key. I create a supportive environment where mistakes are learning opportunities, not failures. Praise and encouragement help students stick with challenging material.
I encourage students to explain concepts in their own words. This checks understanding and reinforces retention through active learning.
Regular feedback allows me to fine-tune my approach. I check frequently for understanding and adapt pacing or activities based on the student's needs.
