I am a Farnham-based postgraduate student specialising in History and English tuition, with an emphasis on developing higher level research, essay writing and presentation skills. Since my days in the Air Training Corps, I have long known that I have a enthusiasm for teaching and tutoring, especially since I personally did not always find the school environment to be conducive to learning, and having a tutor that understood that was immensely helpful for me.
During my time served with the Air Training Corps, I attained top classification and therefore progressed to become an Instructor Cadet, where my responsibilities including the teaching of both new recruits and existing cadets. I conducted group lessons and one-to-one teaching on a diverse range of subjects, including but not limited to; weapons handling, classification coursework and exams, Duke of Edinburgh Award, drill and care of uniform. It was during my time in this role that I understood the responsibility of teaching, and the need to be flexible and adapt my approach to suit the individual.
More recently, whilst studying at the University of York, on several occasions I was given the freedom to conduct individual seminars on history-related topics, to present individual research findings and conclusions. As a third-year, I offered informal tuition to first year History students who had yet to find their feet at university. During my Masters year, I continue to conduct seminars when the chance is offered.
During the first lesson, a prospective tutee of mine will be offered the time and freedom to demonstrate what they can do already, and will be asked about what aspects of the subject they currently struggle with, so I can develop a personal tuition plan for each tutee. Once we have established the areas that need improvement, I endeavour to tie together solutions with the individual strengths of the tutee. Subsequent lessons will take a structured and engaging approach to eliminating the identified issues and incorporating the learning objectives into the tutee's future work, both with me and with their current educational institution.
