Gary

I have recently taken early retirement and moved to Derbyshire from Northumberland where I ran a successful tutoring business for over 15 years teaching maths to students ranging from all ages. I graduated with honours in maths and over the years I have tutored many children with outstanding results and recommendations. I get so much pleasure from seeing an individual develop their confidence in maths and the skills to help pupils make speedy progress towards achieving their goals.

My aim is to improve on the students predicted grade and for them to go away with a sense of achievement.

So in June 2010, I set up my own business, Curveball Learning. This specialises in teaching children the basic skills of Maths with an emphasis on practical applications in addition to exam success.

Tutoring Experience

I offer expertise in Key Stage 1-3 , GCSE / IGCSE and Independent Entrance Exams. Over the years, I have been astounded at the lack of confidence and skills that some children have in the basic principles of maths. Fundamental concepts such as times tables are unquestionably essential to the development and understanding of Maths at all levels, in both education and the workplace. I also have links to the teaching profession through family and professional contacts.

Tutoring Approach

My approach to learning takes place in a relaxed but purposeful atmosphere. The pupil goes away with a sense of achievement and a belief they are capable of improving and increase their enjoyment towards. Support materials are provided to ensure that students can be absolutely confident that they are following the course as intended by the examination board.

Students often find it difficult due to peer pressure to question when struggling to understand a particular topic. On a one to one basis this is easily overcome and it does result in significant improvements in their attainment.

Emphasis is placed on improving confidence in exam situations through the use of past examination questions and developing exam technique. Revision strategies and support programmes are designed for each individual student.
