I am a retired English teacher and head of department who currently marks AQA GCSE English Literature and Cambridge IGCSE English Language. I have been tutoring privately for several years in small groups, one-to-one and online.
I have completed several maternity covers, tutored via the NTP programme and for the Virtual School.
My style is sympathetic and I have the skills and experience to help tutees realise their potential. I am particularly aware of the quiet child who may be too shy to ask the teacher for clarification if there is something they do not understand.
I have been teaching English since 1983. My background is in KS3, KS4 and KS5.
My tutoring is tailored to meet the tutee’s needs and I am well-versed in teaching students the techniques needed to enable progression. It is deeply rewarding to see how rapidly students gain confidence and make progress when they have 1:1 tuition. The first lesson is critical in building rapport and identifying strengths and weaknesses. For both KS3 and KS4, I usually begin with a literary extract to assess reading fluency, understanding and comprehension. This also enables me to have a conversation with the student and to assess where the tutee is now.
