I am an enthusiastic young professional. I work in research support at the University of Leicester. I am friendly and generally an upbeat person. I love maths but I realise maths is one of those subject that people dislike but have to do. I try my best to make it as painless a process as possible!
I have been a tutor since 2010. I have completed a masters and a PhD in physics where I taught seminars and laboratories to undergraduates during my PhD and really enjoyed it.
I was a maths tutor for After18 (charity) where I tutored students from a wide range of abilities including KS3, GCSE, and A Level.
I have a younger sibling with dyscalculia (similar to dyslexia but with numbers) and I have coached her through many maths exams using a variety of different methods.
I have an initial session to find out where the student is and what they want to achieve and in what time frame. I then do weekly sessions where we do any and all of the following:
- Go through problems and / or exam questions
- Develop a revision timetable
- Focus on a particular topic e.g. angles, fractions, differentials
- Build confidence through quizzing
- Get ahead on the following years curriculum
- Design real-world applications for the maths that is being taught
My methods for getting concepts across vary depending on the student. In many instances it is getting past the "I can't do maths" mentality. Once that has been overcome students progress much more quickly!
