My name is Emily Stein and I have been a primary school teacher, dedicated to supporting children with their learning so they can reach their full potential. I have been teaching for ten years and love supporting young children learning to read, write, calculate and discover the world around them. But I understand this is not always easy, which is why I like to provide a more bespoke support through tutoring, to help with some of those horrible little tests children have throughout their primary career. Away from the classroom, I love to cook and spend time with my family, taking our dog Otto for walks.
I have been teaching since September 2014 (ten years) and have taught in two primary schools in Tower Hamlets in London and most recently, a special needs school in Hertfordshire. I was an Assistant Headteacher for Key Stage 1 at my second school and have an NPQML (National Professional Qualification for Middle Leadership).
Over the 10 years, I have taught in all years of the primary phase but spent an extended amount of time in Year 6, preparing children for the Key Stage 2 SATs and preparing them for secondary school.
I have also spent an extended amount of time in Key Stage 1, teaching all the phonics phases and preparing children for the Phonics Screening Test at the end of Year 1 and the now optional Key Stage 1 SATs at the end of Year 2.
I approach my tutoring like I would teaching a lesson. A fun and engaging starter to motivate the child, but also cover any prior strategies or misconceptions from a previous session. A main teaching point or strategy taught by me and then provide the opportunity for the child to practice that strategy and work through any misconceptions together, until they feel confident and can tackle newly taught strategies independently.
If support for statutory tests (Phonics Screening Check, Year 4 Multiplication Tables Check, SATs) is needed, I will use past test materials so the child becomes confident and comfortable with the test materials and understands the format of test taking, which can be scary and confusing at such a young age.
