I recently completed my PhD in History at the University of Oxford. I live in London and combine tutoring with freelance research and writing.
I have taught at undergraduate level as well as working as a teaching assistant in independent and state primary schools. I have experience privately tutoring secondary school pupils and helping with university/Oxbridge applications.
I wish to help pupils to develop independent thought, self-motivation and
enthusiasm, which I believe are the key factors that determine academic success. I seek to establish a relationship with my pupils based on mutual respect where the pupil understands that I am there to facilitate and assist but that their achievement will ultimately depend on independent hard work outside of our sessions. As such, I focus on building aspiration and commitment through positivity and high expectations, setting clear targets. I believe lessons must be engaging to be effective, and therefore I make sure to adapt my approach to suit the individual pupil. I use contemporary references and examples to inspire my pupils to engage with their subject beyond the confines of the classroom and textbook. I try to ensure that pupils have a clear understanding of the basic principles of the subject they are studying in order to enable progress.
