Hello, my name is Ed and I am a veterinary student at the University of Edinburgh. I have a big interest in biology and chemistry, especially how they become more intertwined the deeper into the subjects you go. Outside of studying I am an avid rock climber and runner.
In the past I have tutored GCSE students and A-level students, mainly with in-person methods of teaching, finding clients through word-of-mouth. I am now expanding into online methods of teaching. My primary subjects are Biology and Chemistry and I can tutor these up to A-level standard. I am also capable of teaching iGCSE physics and maths. Having completed my A-levels in these three subjects in the Summer of 2022, I have an up-to-date understanding of what the exam boards are looking for in students and I can offer valuable insight into how best to answer questions according to their mark schemes. I have also tutored these subjects to the same standard for the Scottish exam board.
First I like to assess the level of understanding my students have. I usually do this by talking through a few questions with the student and occasionally requesting that I see some examples of their answers. I will then target these specific areas, because when it comes to revision it is very common that students will spend less time on the topics they find the hardest. This is usually because it feels less rewarding to come out of revision without making as much progress as you hoped. By looking into these topics together, it is less likely that my students will avoid revising these topics, thus increasing the breadth of their knowledge within the curriculum.
I like to focus on answering exam-style questions once I feel a student has a good understanding of a specific topic. After all, the exam is what they are working towards, so adequate understanding of the types of questions that can come up and most importantly how to answer them, is key to success. This will be a combination of written and verbal responses, as I do not like to feel as if I am lecturing my students - I aim for a friendly interaction.
