Male, 38, qualified with 10+ years’ experience (former Head of Department, and now Assistant Headteacher) currently working in a large comprehensive school in Worcestershire. I read, I run and I enjoy teaching students about English and supporting them in making progress.
I’ve had strong success with my tutees and can provide current references as well.
Qualified for 14 years with a degree in English Literature (University of Sheffield) and Master's in Education (University of Worcester).
I have a strong track record of students achieving at or above their target grades across a range of abilities at GCSE and A Level. Currently teaching A Level Literature (AQA Spec A) and A Level English Language (AQA). I've also tutored through First Tutors before (and can provide references).
I enjoy teaching and helping young people enjoy English and literature and how both contribute to life beyond education.
Dependent on the client: some will just want to pass, others want to learn and understand with a view to exploring English beyond compulsory education.
However, the focus of the sessions is on knowledge and skills. I have a very no nonsense approach and will push your child to do their best - the emphasis will be on them working and learning.
Regardless of the aim, the parent is involved and has their part to play in the process. I may ask you to test your child on knowledge or contact the school or see their reports - anything that gives me a sense of their learning journey so far.
I can bring a range of teaching tools, ideas and resources to help the client make progress and support them in securing their target grade.
If there is something specific you are after, please contact me and I will see if I can accommodate: poetry, prose, Shakespeare, reading and writing skills etc.
With regards to what your child learns, often I try to follow what they are doing in school to boost confidence in their learning and deepen their skill knowledge. When it comes towards exam time, the focus will shift to question practice and timed papers. I find it useful to make overviews so that everyone can see what needs are being met and to ensure all topics are covered in the time frame.
I find it best to engage with parents and empower them to ask their child what they are doing and track their progress; it opens up a dialogue that can sometimes be missing when students move to secondary education.
I use a range of resources from the exam board and my own creation to support students.
