Dario

I am a PhD candidate in the Department of Physics at University College London, where I have been awarded an EPSRC CASE studentship and am currently working on an industrial collaboration with a London-based quantum computing company. My main research interests lie both in applied areas of quantum information and quantum computing and in theoretical and mathematical areas of quantum gravity and holography, as well as in interpretational and foundational issues in theoretical physics.

Tutoring Experience

I have more than five years of experience in teaching mathematics, physics, philosophy and languages (Italian and English as foreign languages). I have helped students of different age groups and levels, ranging from KS1 pupils to university students and adult learners and I am working with major London-based tutoring agencies.

Some of my past teaching experiences include:
- teaching subjects such as calculus, linear algebra, set theory, statistics, differential equations, classical mechanics, thermodynamics and statistical mechanics, quantum mechanics, special and general relativity, and formal logic to undergraduate university students and foundation-year students in the UK (e.g. Oxford, LSE, UCL, Birkbeck).
- teaching mathematics and physics to International Baccalaureate and A Level (OCR, AQA and Edexcel exam boards) students in central London;
- leading two intensive review courses (Mathematics HL and Mathematics SL for the IB) for last-year students at international schools in Milan in April 2017.
- teaching English as a second language to a class of more than twenty pupils in a primary school in Milan, as part of a volunteering project;
- helping IB students understand how to set up a coherent argument in TOK (Theory of Knowledge, an IB subject) and how to research and structure a good TOK essay;
- teaching Italian as a second language to adult learners, including beginners and a more experienced student who wanted to improve his speaking and writing skills.
- teaching mathematics one-to-one to children, including a Year 6 pupil who obtained excellent results in her SATs and was accepted into a prestigious secondary school (Grey Coat Hospital) as a result.

Tutoring Approach

I have experience of teaching students of different age groups and backgrounds, ranging from primary school children to undergraduate students and adult learners.

I believe that teaching should be tailored on the student’s individual needs and interests, and that this cannot always be achieved by frontal teaching in a large classroom.

I think that a tutor’s role is first of all to stimulate the student’s curiosity in the subject, and to foster self-confidence and enthusiasm. This can be achieved by discussing the topics together in a way that is engaging to the student, by encouraging critical thinking, and by identifying the student’s difficulties, gaps and misconceptions.

Being a university student myself, I feel I can often relate to the learning needs and difficulties students are experiencing.
