I have always been passionate and fascinated by Mathematics. This lead me to study it at the University of Leeds where I specialised in abstract algebra and logic. My dissertation explored the foundations of mathematics and how set theory and category theory can be used for this. After graduating I worked offshore for four years until deciding it was right for me to follow my passions and trained as a maths teacher which enabled me to discover the thorough enjoyment of working with young people and the magic of being responsible for learning to take place. My interests are reading, keeping fit, being outdoors in anyway possible and cooking. I take great pleasure from socialising and working with a wide variety of people.
I have a PGCE from the University of Brighton and worked for three years at Hove Park School, East Sussex where I taught the full range of ages and abilities, including A Level. I also was active in pastoral support and have experience dealing with and supporting students through the many issues young people can encounter.
I love the subject and wish to bring the same passion out in my students. I also believe it "makes sense" and is consistent. I always justify why a particular approach or fact is valid, where possible this will be done through investigation or open questioning as if students can justify an approach for themselves it will be secured in their knowledge. I'm aware of the particular requirements of confidence boosting that many students require in Maths. I use questioning to explore how a student understands a topic and approach and ensure they understand the "why" of an approach and not just the "how". I remain upbeat and positive throughout all teaching sessions and am aware of the role relationship building and trust that is required for an effective teacher student rapport.
