I have been a secondary school teacher of English for 10 years, as well as Classics A-level, and more recently, Latin at KS3. I am dedicated to ensuring students make progress and achieve what they are capable of, have a genuine passion for my subjects and a great knowledge of the curriculum and secondary exam system.

Tutoring Experience

Having taught for ten years, I have a great knowledge and understanding of the curriculum, including the English GCSE specification, of which I have taught both the AQA and Edexcel exam syllabus. I have experience of teaching drama at both KS3 and KS4 with WJEC and am currently teaching Latin and Classics at KS3, 4 and 5.

I have much experience of teaching English as a foreign language, having completed a TEFL course prior to my training as a secondary school teacher. I've taught EFL at all levels and abilities, both in summer schools in the UK, and at an English language school in China, where I taught students from young toddlers up to adults.

Tutoring Approach

I have a relaxed and friendly approach to working with students, and a positive approach to learning; focussing on the students' strengths as well as their areas for improvement.

I work on identifying the particular skill or skills the student needs to develop in order to make progress, and work on strategies to improve that particular area of concern. I believe it is important to equip the student with the skills they need, so they are then able to work independently and take ownership and responsibility for their own learning, thus empowering them and improving their confidence. I do this through building positive relationships with students and employing strategies developed through my extensive teaching experience, such as carefully and considered questioning, engaging the student in thoughtful discussion and debate, and tailoring resources to their particular needs.
