Charles

Hello! I am a specialist tutor in English and Drama / Theatre Studies who focuses on transforming written technique. I will be completing my Masters in Creative Writing part-time at Cambridge next year and hold a First-class Joint Honours Degree in English Literature and Drama from the University of East Anglia. I also prepare students for entrance exams, scholarships and UCAS applications, honing interview skills alongside curricular studies. I am a full-time tutor and will be continuing to work with students in London during my postgraduate study.

Tutoring Experience

I have tutored students in a range of subjects and, as such, have considerable experience in identifying the particular issues faced by individual students. Having worked in various private and comprehensive schools, I am well acquainted with the new syllabuses for English and Drama/Theatre Studies. I have also prepared pupils for UCAS applications, successfully securing places for many of my students at some of the UKs top universities.

My specialism - simply due to having so many requests for help in these subjects - are English and Drama students who have the knowledge but perhaps struggle to convert it into the grades they deserve. These subjects are particularly tricky and require a carefully-honed written technique to obtain the highest grades.

Tutoring Approach

I prefer a relaxed but engaging approach that helps my pupils to apply their knowledge with confidence. I focus on essay-writing and exam technique, providing a clear strategy for each pupil I work with. I firmly believe in bringing a subject to life by teaching it through the world of the tutee, so as to ensure its relevance. Central to my approach is that sessions should always be fun whilst continuing to address the issues at hand.

I am able to teach in students' homes within London or online. I also offer tuition to students who live further out, as long as the parent or guardian is happy for the student to meet halfway. This has worked really well with students in the past as I use the members area in Picturehouse Central in Piccadilly.

I always offer a 30 minute free consultation before beginning sessions where we can discuss your goals and expectations (this is indicated as 50% off on the First Tutors website). My rates have also been recently reduced in order to support families and students who have been affected by Coronavirus.

If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to get in touch: I will always endeavour to reply within a few hours to your email.

Please find a couple of extra testimonials from previous tutees below:

The tutoring sessions I had with Charlie leading up to my A2 exams firstly helped to simply calm me down about the looming pressure I was about to face. He helped me to apply my knowledge in a way that would showcase it best to examiners. In particular the way in which he helped me structure essays in timed conditions certainly helped to boost my grade in English.” - Catherine Fenton, A2 English

"Charlie is a very approachable guy and the support he gave me to help write and construct my personal statement to study medicine at Cambridge was invaluable.'' - Mohammad Sikder, Oxbridge Applicant

''Charlie’s CV sessions were very helpful, working on my CV presentation and Interview technique very much helped me secure my first Job at an exciting new fashion company.'' - Amalia Corbett, College Graduate
