I am an experienced, qualified Science teacher specialised in Physics. I earned a 1st class Master of Physics from the University of St Andrews, after A*-A grades for the International Baccalaureate (score of 41/45). I am a Chartered Teacher, meaning that I have extensive pedagogical knowledge and I use evidence-based methods.
I am passionate about the subjects I teach: I believe all students have the potential to succeed as long as they are supported appropriately. Physics is a fascinating subject, but many students are turned off by the difficulty of concepts, Maths involved, and the abundance of subject-specific terminology. I can help you in getting over such hurdles.
I have over 7 years experience in teaching and tutoring, from KS3 to KS5. I produce my own high quality teaching resources, regularly attend training workshops and read extensively to support the development of my teaching practice. My subject knowledge is regularly considered 'Outstanding'.
As a successful learner myself, I can guide you in finding methods of studying and revising that are effective at every level of schooling. These include (but are not limited to): how to take notes, mind-mapping, making a revision timetable, and exam techniques.
I strive to create a positive learning environment where the learner feels comfortable enough to ask questions; the student's needs, attitude and personality shapes the learning process.
In the first session, I will ask the learner what they think are the obstacles they are facing, and what topics and skills they want to improve. I will ask them subject-specific questions, to assess their prior knowledge level and identify specific issues, e.g. struggling to re-arrange equations or interpreting exam questions.
Then, we will methodically tackle the topic areas identified; I keep a log of what we cover so that periodically we can revise the content. This helps with consolidating recall of information, allows for a more holistic preparation to final exams, and enhances students' ability to link different topics together.
I commit to giving parents regular updates.
I am flexible in terms of tutoring dates and times, I understand that sometimes life gets in the way of planned meetings, and that extra sessions may be necessary in preparation for exams.
