I have been a private tutor working in East Hampshire for twelve years. I am a Chartered Physicist and a member of the Institute of Physics professional standards panel. I hold a PhD in Astronomy from University College London and an upper second class degree in Astrophysics, also from University College London.
I have an Enhanced DBS certificate.
In my spare time I serve as a STEM Ambassador. Projects have included careers workshops; school talks; demonstrating equipment at Winchester Science Centre; helping Brownies, Guides and Scouts with their Astronomy badges and demonstrating experiments at science fairs.
Past roles include teaching, working as a Project Manager for EU funded R&D projects, working as a consultant IT Systems Analyst, and working on software specifications.
I enjoy attending public Physics and Astronomy lectures.
My hobbies are crafts including machine knitting, sewing and working in the garden. I am married with one son.
I have been a private tutor for eleven years. I am well established both online and tutoring in my local area. I tutor GCSE, A-Level and degree students, as well as tutoring for the Oxford Physics Aptitude Test. I have a good track record of satisfied clients.
Face to face tutorials take place at my home. Online tutorials are delivered through the Bitpaper video conferencing system and Bitpaper online whiteboard, which I provide. The advantage of online tutoring is that it may be delivered directly into your home via your tablet or computer.
I have tutored students of many different abilities, and I tailor my work to each individual.
I offer students help with:
-retakes
-improving marks after mock results
-the Oxford Physics Aptitude Test
-guidance with exam technique
-understanding Physics
-maths for Physics including calculus, graph plotting, statistics, trigonometry, series.
Students’ thinking skills and problem-solving skills are improved through most importantly practice and exposure to many different problems. I find simply providing solutions does not work for Physics, nor does repeating explanations.
Exam boards covered include AQA, OCR A, OCR B, IB Higher, Oxford Physics Aptitude Test, Undergraduate Physics and Astronomy courses.
I give guidance and solutions for returned mock papers with and without mark schemes.
I recommend setting assignments as I believe this is good practice for the student and it allows the student's progress to be measured, as well as helping me to identify and work on weaker areas of understanding.
Sessions normally last one hour and typically consist of
•homework feedback and marks,
•help with the previous week's assignments,
•assistance with any questions arising from school-work,
•problems and past paper practice,,
•new assignments.
Tutorials may be delivered either face to face or online.
I have a great enthusiasm for Physics and Astronomy.
