I am 62 and my four children have just recently left home. I volunteered as a teacher for the Government backed Action Tutoring because now that my children are busy with their own lives, I would like to help other young people to grow and to learn.
I taught English Matric at Promat School in Soweto, South Africa for two years.
I have been tutoring for Action Tutoring since last year and have learnt a lot through doing that. I worked for BBC Newsnight for 5 years as a producer where the ability to write clear, good English was essential. I have also taught my children to read and write when they were young and helped them with their essay writing when they were older.
Before teaching in South Africa, I did the TEFL course in London which was excellent as they taught us not just what to teacher but how to teach. They encouraged us to elicit information rather than dictate. I know from my own experience that the key to good teaching is gain and keep your pupils' attention and to use a positive approach that encourages the pupil, to build their confidence and to let them know that mistakes and lack of knowledge is fine - that is why I am here teaching them now!
