I have a PhD in particle physics and a love of learning and helping others to learn, as well as over 20 years of experience in universities, including teaching physics, computing and maths at a range of levels. With two children now at secondary school, I am enjoying the opportunity to go back to the foundations of these subjects, tutoring my own children and others to help them gain understanding and confidence.
My career in physics has given me a strong understanding of physical and mathematical concepts, their application, and how to get these across to a wide range of audiences, from school-age students to professors. The great advantage of tutoring is the opportunity to work interactively, choosing the topics, level and pace to suit the individual student.
Apart from tutoring GCSE and A-level students. I have undertaken a wide variety of teaching assignments, ranging from tutoring individuals and small groups to developing and leading courses for up to 300 students. My work has included tutoring first and second year university physics students in maths and physics, designing and teaching computing courses from first- to third-year level, running training workshops for researchers, organizing physics masterclasses for sixth formers, and supervising physics and computing research projects by masters students.
Other responsibilities have included contributing to research projects in particle physics at CERN, writing software, and managing an IT support team.
Whatever your starting point, I will help you identify your strengths and the areas where your skills need development, and guide you to build your understanding and confidence step by step. I find that past exam papers are a good starting point, but take a flexible approach tailored to the individual student. For the best learning it helps if you are willing to attempt some additional work between sessions so that I can give feedback and adapt the tutoring sessions accordingly.
