I'm a second-year student of French and Spanish at Oxford University with a real passion for languages and teaching. I have lived and worked in France and spent a lot of time in the Spanish speaking world, so I have good conversational command of both languages. Whilst I am forced to do regular exams and translations, keeping me up to date with the linguistic and grammatical aspects of the languages, my degree is largely focussed on the literary and cultural aspects surrounding the French and Spanish speaking world. The heavy workload at Oxford means that I am constantly studying around 3 new texts every week, which puts me in a good position to help with the literature side of A level French and Spanish, regardless of the different texts students will be studying. I am friendly and approachable, with excellent interpersonal skills and a lot of enthusiasm both for teaching and for studying languages.
I have privately tutored clients of very different ages and abilities. My experience includes conversational classes with primary school students who have native French or Spanish speaking parents, beginners classes for adults with an interest in languages, and A-Level tuition of French grammar and literature. Working in France as an au pair for three months, I tutored the three children I looked after in English, building strong relationships with them and creating a fun and engaging learning environment. Alongside this work, I taught in the children's primary school, initially as a language assistant but later taking classes of thirty alone. I also taught English and maths to women of all ages in India, again for a period of three months, which gave me vital teaching experience and vastly improved my communication skills especially across linguistic barriers.
My previous experiences of tutoring have taught me how to adapt my teaching approach to each student, depending on the ways in which they learn best. I aim to create an engaging learning environment in which students can develop an authentic passion for languages. The high-quality education I have received at University has equipped me with a wide range of resources for grammatical help, and clear ways of explaining difficult grammar points. Having recently done my A-Levels I have good insight into the best ways to approach them and how to best prepare for exams. Similarly, having spent a lot of time in French and Spanish-speaking countries, I am in a good position to give conversational classes in which people can practice their language skills that they might not get a chance to use very often, or help to increase student's confidence in speaking.
