Hi there! My name is Bea and I'm a second-year medical student at Newcastle University. I have always been passionate about the sciences, and I am confident that I can help foster this love for learning in other students looking for fun and engaging, yet thorough lessons. As a recent GSCE and IB graduate, achieving 9 A*s and 43 points respectively, I know that my experience will enable me to approach the lessons from the perspective of a student who understands and appreciates the difficulties of these syllabuses. Ultimately, I hope to help you build your confidence and adequately prepare you with the tools you need to reach your academic goals.
Throughout High school, I actively participated in and led drop-in and help sessions run by students, for other students, for the subjects Chemistry and Biology. This has given me the skills required to not only prepare useful resources and devise teaching methods for difficult concepts but also taught me to be flexible, adapting my support to each student, ensuring that I can meet their individual needs.
I hope to build truly comfortable and trusting relationships with my students, as I believe that confidence and self-belief are key aspects of making a successful learner. To achieve this, my sessions will be based on frequent feedback from the student and lesson plans that are truly tailored to their needs, moulding and adapting the resources and the teaching methods I use to suit their learning styles.
Typically, to make the most out of the session, I will initially use diagrams, concept maps and visual methods to help explain concepts or topics that the student wishes to cover. Accompanying this, I will actively refer back to either the syllabus or other specification lists to ensure we cover everything needed, ensuring the student feels confident that everything has been thoroughly explained. Then, I'll help guide the student through exam-style questions, helping consolidate the session's topics. Through this process, we'll be able to identify any gaps or misunderstandings in the student's knowledge and correct these, as well as highlight strengths in the student's answers, helping them to build confidence. I also think it important to incorporate spaced learning into future lessons by quickly recapping areas of weakness from past sessions to ensure the student will remember key information and truly grow as a learner with my guidance.
Alongside science tuition and help with IB and GCSEs specifically, I am also more than happy to help guide students through medical school applications, offering insight and advice for strong personal statements, interview preparation and UCAT testing.
Finally I recommend before starting any sessions, we set up a quick call for both you and/or a parent to ensure that I am the right fit for your or your child’s learning goals and style. It’ll be a quick chat to ensure you can get to know me and my character and make sure your money won’t be wasted.
