My name is Barney and I currently work as an architectural assistant for a practice in London. Upon completing my degree in architecture at the University of Brighton two years ago I wanted to to take a small break from the world of architecture and this resulted in me becoming a cover teacher for the year. Looking back I consider it to have been invaluable, not only for my own personal development but also it was an incredibly rewarding job, aiding students in their learning and seeing them progress day to day.
I spent a year as a cover teacher at a top boys grammar school in Buckinghamshire, Dr Challoners. the majority of my time was spent covering maths lessons along with art and graphics. This ranged across all years so it really gave me the chance to work with a range of students and grow my ability to adapt to a variety of situations. Communication was what I always found to be key, it was imperative to notice, adapt and process how I was going to work with each student. I can now comfortably say in my current job I rely on good communication everyday and my work as a cover teacher progressed my ability extensively.
My approach is very much in line with how I work in my current job, by setting a firm foundation and understanding the WHY and the HOW. By developing this, before bringing the detail of problem solving, it makes the following steps a far more understandable process, it is simply then down to adapting to each individual question, utilising your base knowledge. The process is always the key detail.
