I am a well qualified secondary English teacher with over 25 teaching experience in both the independent and state sector, teaching the full ability range. I am very enthusiastic about works of literature and like to instil this enthusiasm in my students. Throughout my years as a teacher I have achieved excellent pass rates for Common Entrance, GCSE, AS and A level. I have also coached students to successful Oxbridge entrance.
In the secondary school context, I have always encouraged students of all ages to seek help and receive tutoring from me on a one-to-one basis, when required. This has resulted in many after school and lunchtime tutoring sessions, particularly revision sessions in the run up to A, AS and GCSE examinations and help with coursework.
I like to encourage a 'can do' attitude in all my students, whatever their level of ability. Their self-belief and confidence is an essential element of the learning process so, in my tutorial sessions, I encourage this through much encouragement and positive feedback. I help students, who find accessing literary texts difficult, to develop the skills necessary for effective close reading and analysis of text. These skills are the foundation for successful examination results. The techniques that I use vary according to the individual's needs and understanding and are established early on in the tutorial relationship.
