Annabel

Online Maths and English Tutor

I'm a dedicated and friendly tutor with a year of experience helping students build confidence and reach their full potential in both Maths and English. I’ve supported foundation-level students in developing key skills and achieving beyond expectations, and helped those stuck at grade 6 or 7 push through to secure top GCSE results, including grade 8 in Maths.

I'm currently a second-year Law student at the University of Nottingham, I thoroughly enjoy my studies and have always had a passion for learning - as a tutor I love that I can help others enjoy it too and feel more confident in their abilities. Before tutoring, I volunteered at a swim school, where I discovered my love for working with children and supporting their progress. I bring patience, encouragement, and positive energy to every session.

Outside of tutoring, I’m passionate about fitness—especially Pilates and yoga—which helps me stay focused, calm, and balanced in all aspects of life. I aim to bring that same mindset into my tutoring, helping students feel capable and confident in their learning journey.

Tutoring Experience

Over the past year, I’ve worked as a private tutor in Maths and English through an agency, supporting six students across a range of abilities. I’ve helped foundation-level students move from struggling with the basics to performing confidently at the top of their tier. I’ve also worked with students aiming for higher GCSE grades, and focussed on showing them patterns among papers and questions, equipping them with the tools they need to reach the top grades.

My experience includes working with neurodivergent students, where I’ve learned to adapt my teaching style to suit different learning needs, whether that’s incorporating visual learning tools, using structured repetition, or breaking down complex tasks into manageable steps.

In addition to tutoring, I’m also a peer mentor at university, currently supporting a first-year law student with their transition into higher education. This has further developed my ability to explain difficult concepts clearly, offer practical support, and build positive academic relationships based on encouragement and trust.

Tutoring Approach

My tutoring approach is student-focused and flexible, designed to meet each learner where they are and help them progress with confidence. I begin with a baseline test to identify their strengths and any areas that need improvement. From there, I create a loose plan tailored to their needs, which we adapt week by week depending on how they’re progressing—whether that means moving on or spending more time consolidating a topic.

Each lesson typically starts with a clear explanation of a concept, followed by worked examples to build understanding. We then move on to guided practice questions, and finally, exam-style questions to apply what they’ve learned. I like to go through some of these questions together, but also encourage independent thinking by giving students time to attempt questions on their own before I step in with support. This structure helps build both skill and confidence in a way that feels achievable.
