I am a highly experienced tutor with a Master's in English from Oxford (distinction) and several years experience working in education. I was lucky enough to enjoy my own education, and I love passing on this positive experience of learning to my students.
I offer English tuition at any age or level and to all abilities, from primary school up to degree level. I also offer tuition in essay writing skills, as well as Creative Writing at all levels, whether as part of the 11+, 13+ or GCSE examinations, or for the stand-alone Creative Writing qualification at A-Level.
I am also a practising visual artist, and in 2019 I was awarded a Newman Young Artist Scholarship by the Essential School of Painting in London. I have exhibited in galleries and venues throughout London, and you can find my work on my website Removed I offer fun and interactive Art classes and workshops, supporting children and adults to develop their existing skills and introducing them to new and experimental methods and techniques. I also offer Art and History of Art tutoring at GCSE and A-Level.
I have been working in education since 2012 and as a private tutor since 2016, with around 10-15 students per week, ranging from key stage 1 up to university level. I have an excellent track record of supporting students to increase their grades at GCSE and A-Level, and have also successfully prepared students for 11+ and 13+ entry to a range of competitive schools, as well as to Oxbridge.
During the years I spent working in mainstream education, I developed an in-depth understanding of teaching methods and supporting young people with a range of needs. From 2012 to 2015, I worked as a teaching assistant at a mainstream secondary school, supporting students with special educational needs to access the curriculum and achieve their best. This included working with a lot of GCSE English students, helping to prepare them for their exams. I also taught Art and Design in this setting. From 2015 to 16, I worked as a Learning Mentor at a primary school, providing one-to-one and small group tuition to help fill the gaps in students' learning, and ultimately support them to progress back in the classroom environment.
As well as working in public education, I've been employed on a freelance basis by a number of educational charities since 2013, offering creative writing and visual arts workshops and mentoring, both within schools and alternative settings (for students who are unable to attend mainstream education).
I am also qualified as Child and Adolescent Counsellor, working in schools to offer support to children struggling with emotional difficulties. This experience contributes to the success of my tutoring style, which is enriched by a knowledge and understanding of the relationship between child development and academic achievement.
I work in a way that is led by the needs of my students and their parents. It's always important to establish the areas that a student is struggling with, and to find out what he or she hopes to get out of the tuition. Sometimes, students or parents have a clear idea of what they want and, in that case, I carefully tailor tuition to those requirements. Others times, they might be less sure, in which case I will assess what areas need work and structure the learning accordingly.
Perhaps most importantly though, the learning must be creative and fun; I always endeavour to bring the subject alive and engender newfound enthusiasm and curiosity. In my experience, all students - no matter their needs and abilities - have a talent for learning, which can express itself in different ways. I see it as my job to work with each student in a way that best nurtures that talent.
