I qualified to teach as a mature student after having my own children. Teaching them, and looking for ways to make learning meaningful, I developed a greater appreciation of education and the life choices it affords us. I love learning and I love teaching: it is so rewarding.
Since qualifying I have worked in schools and since 2008, with Derbyshire County Council as a one to one tutor. I predominantly teach maths and English to key stage 3/4 students but I also work with primary students. This, I believe gives me a valuable insight into issues around transition form primary to secondary education some students encounter. particularly in maths.
Aware of my own preferred learning style, I adopt a student centred approach to learning and I have developed a range of resources to enable me to do this. With so much to occupy our minds in the 21st century, I have found a bottom down approach (big picture down to specifics) works for many students but where it doesn't I will look for a suitable approach. Some students like to work on areas they are covering in school, others have a clear idea of areas they find difficult and want to work on these. Where students have no preferred path, I would start with an assessment and take it form there or start with areas,I have found, commonly cause concern for students.
