Teacher of Mathematics at a sixth form college. top independent school. Formerly taught at top academic schools including St George’s college, Weybridge, Millfield and the highly academic King's College School, Wimbledon. Tutoring for over 15 years at a range of levels from year 1 through to university maths. I have had entire classes gain A and A* grades at A level and GCSE. I have also taught the IB Mathematics courses in both analysis and approaches, and applications and interpretations to both standard level and higher level. I have tutored students to A* grades at all levels and helped students gain academic scholarships at 11+ and 13+ at some of the most competitive independent schools, including Sevenoaks, Brighton College and KCS Wimbledon. I have a degree in mathematics and also a masters degree in Mathematical Finance. I have also worked at Scotch College, Adelaide, a top independent school in South Australia.
In school, I now specialise in the Edexcel A level course, teaching exclusively maths and further maths A level. This includes teaching the following further mathematics modules: Core pure 1&2, Further Pure 1, Further Mechanics 1 and Further Statistics 1. I have had a student gain a mark of 600/600 on the old A level specification and more recently a student gain 299/300 in the new A level (first examined 2018). Furthermore, I have helped a number of students both inside and outside of school achieve A*- C grades when initially predicted a grade U.
I have developed an extensive, detailed scheme of work for preparation for entry in to the top schools at 11+ with resources provided for all topics as well as a vast selection of past exam papers. All students whom I have taken through this programme have gained places at all schools they have applied for, and been offered academic scholarships at at least one of their chosen schools. Furthermore, I ensure not only that they are ready for entrance exams but that they are also fully prepared for the mathematics that they will encounter at senior school. Almost all of these students are now in a top set or extension class at their senior school.

I believe strongly in helping students to understand the reasons behind the undertaking of given steps in solving mathematical problems, and will eschew algorithmic teaching and tutoring wherever possible. Instead going back to basic principles if necessary and building up from there in order to understand the concepts at hand. To build a strong mathematical understanding, I believe it is at first vital to determine the student’s weakness and address these issues, whilst challenging and correcting any misconceptions.
I believe it is important that students can feel safe to fail during tutoring sessions, and aim to create an environment where they feel confident that they can have a go at a problem, and be gently guided where necessary without fear of getting it wrong.
I also offer guidance to tutees and parents as to how they can best prepare themselves or improve, outside of the tutoring sessions, suggesting resources and strategies to help them succeed where required.
