Specialise in "catch-up" tutoring, helping students who have fallen behind, through lost lessons (Covid, removed from school because of having been bullied), problems with Literacy or Numeracy, or aspects of a syllabus, or Special Needs (mild condition). If a student genuinely wants to "catch up" or improve, I'm sure I can help them!
Since autumn 2020 I've been teaching with the Government's National Tutoring ("Catch-up") Programme, home-schooling a girl of 11 in six separate subjects. This involves travelling to E. Hants each morning, but I also offer online tuition.
An experienced 1-1 tutor who now also works for a weekend school in Woking,
teaching small groups.
NB Although I only have two "testimonials" here, I have an additional 16 on other websites!
My career has been as a book editor with well-known publishers (have had articles published worldwide in Encyclopaedia Britannica), but previously also in "numerate" roles as accountant, statistician and market analyst. My specialist subject is Written English at all levels, partly because this is my forte, but partly because I'm not convinced that school teachers are giving this aspect of the syllabus sufficient attention; in fact, I have my doubts about their competence in some instances (including those at independent schools!), having witnessed the marking of my students' school work! So my tuition will help to complement what they learn at school, and also "plug gaps" in their teaching.

I've also been assisting with Latin and Eleven-Plus preparation in recent months, as well as Numeracy and Maths at Primary Level.

And I can also advise adults on the wording of job applications and CV preparation, if necessary.
(Discounts available for double-lessons, or where two students wish to be taught together.)

DBS/CRB accredited since 2010. Also, I have to confess that it's a very old photo I've supplied! It's one of my favourites, with my old pal Kelly (I don't like most of my recent ones). I still have the same cheerful smile, and still love cats, so those haven't changed. Just for reference, although Kelly and I both possessed "ginger fur" and whiskers at that time, I'm the one in the glasses!

Tutoring Experience

I've been described as "a natural teacher", despite officially taking up tutoring just three years ago. As a teenager, I instructed trainee motorcyclists, helped friends/relatives with driving lessons and have assisted my office staff both overseas and in the UK with computing and English problems.

As explained above, I principally offer English and Maths at Primary Level, as well as 11-Plus and Entrance Examination, as well as "homework help" in various subjects. The age of recent students has ranged from 6 to 80 (really!) (inc. Adult Learners), whilst their nationalities have included Egyptian, Indian, Russian, Italian, Chinese and Hungarian, as well as British. I now tutor small groups in a "weekend school" as well.

Despite being older than many tutors, I find that my informal, friendly approach quickly helps establish a positive rapport with students of all ages and their parents.

Tutoring Approach

I'm pretty informal and laid-back, and nothing like a "typical" tutor or schoolteacher! I believe this helps me "relate" to my students effectively. If they're happy and cheerful too, I find that they tend to be much more receptive!

I'm especially patient and supportive when students are struggling (I wish my own teachers had been more like me!), and find it immensely satisfying when a student finally says, "You know what?! I understand that now!".

I'm more than happy to initially meet up for a free, no-commitment chat, which will enable us all to get to know each other, discuss the planned objectives, and decide on the direction of the teaching.
