I am a qualified and experienced secondary English teacher, having taught full time across KS3, KS4 and KS5.
As a classroom teacher and tutor, I have a track record of securing pupil progress whether that it is a certain grade for the AQA English Language and Literature papers or intervention at KS2/KS3 to prepare students for their next stage of study.
I enjoy tutoring 1:1 as I can identify and address student misconceptions in real time to make a real difference.

Tutoring Experience

In addition to my classroom experience, I have been a subject leader of English and AQA examiner; I have managed a whole school tutoring programme which focused around literary and increasing pupils' reading age. I am phonics trained (Ruth Miskin Fresh Start) which helps me to support weaker readers who are not at age expected levels.

I have tutored in AQA English Language and Literature for a number of years and I am very knowledgeable about the current specification. Equally, I have had the pleasure of tutoring at primary level for over three years now and I love working with KS1/KS2 pupils in both English and Maths - quite often opting to do whiteboard work.

Whilst I promote that the subject of English is an academic discipline, I am more aware than ever that outstanding English teaching can spark the ability to self advocate, promote agency of the individual and foster a connection to the community.

I have plenty of experience working with pupils with a wide range of special educational needs, including dyslexia. In my lessons and tutoring sessions, material is made accessible but not easier so that all pupils can achieve their full potential.

Tutoring Approach

Positive relationships are at the forefront of my practice - I am very approachable and recognise the barriers to learning that pupils may have. I can offer simple, practical strategies to reading and writing skill whilst building pupils' confidence around reading for comprehension and inference. I also have experience in primary school maths, with specific success in teaching place value and column methods for addition and subtraction.
