Hi! My name is Amina and I am an English, maths and science tutor! I am currently an Optometry student at Anglia Ruskin University, a course that allows me to further develop my skills in maths and science. Although my course is centred around the sciences, I also have a strong passion for English as I am an unashamed bookworm and lover of poetry. Writing poems has allowed me to develop both my empathy as well as my analytical skills- both key to who I am as a tutor. I am currently a tutor at a in-person tuition centre, where I teach all three subjects from KS2 to GCSE. This allows me to suggest different revision methods and alter my teaching methods on an individual basis. I am a patient and caring individual with an infinite desire to inspire others. My enthusiasm and passion for my subjects allows me to encourage and support my students in an exciting and safe environment where wrong answers are only the stepping stones towards success.
I have assisted teachers at LAET by delivering English sessions to small groups of GCSE students from four schools in the Tottenham borough. During this experience I helped contribute ideas for the sessions and gave feedback on what the students enjoyed and benefited from to help improve the teaching style of the following lessons.
I have been tutoring for two years now, both at a tuition centre and online- teaching the subjects science, maths and English from KS2 to A-level. Tutoring in person has allowed me to better my communication and multitasking as I have balanced teaching groups of up to 5 children at a time- all of which are different ages and studying different subjects. Tutoring online has allowed me to improve open my lesson planning skills as I have learnt to adapt my teaching method to suit the needs of an individual student.
During our first session, I will take the time to get to know my student as we make a list of long term goals together- this will be a great way to track progress over time and also provides great student with a sense of motivation and accomplishment. At the beginning of every session we will review and go over what we learnt in last lesson to ensure the student has understood everything well and to help them solidify their knowledge.
I like to ask the students what learning and revision methods they think suit them best. For example: making mind maps to remember information surrounding themes in English texts or perhaps reviewing the mark scheme of a biology paper to ensure the student knows what terminology the examiner is looking out for. I also cater my approach depending on the level at which the student is studying and am in favour of teamwork when it comes to encouraging the student to contribute ideas. Throughout the session I will encourage the student to ask questions and will routinely check if they are understanding the content or if they would prefer to switch to a different teaching method if they’re struggling to understand.
In the final ten to fifteen minutes I like to ask my students what they thought worked well this session and what, if anything, they would like me to do differently next session. This allows me to better cater to the individual and plan the next session accordingly.
