Home Tuition for Maths and English in Haringey

Hi, my name is Adriana and I am a primary teacher in North/East London. I am currently teaching year 5 at an Outstanding-rated school in Waltham Forest in which my students have made great progress in my class. I trained in Australia and moved to London in 2012 where I worked in a variety of settings from Nursery to Year 8. I enjoy working with children and seeing the improvements and learning they can make over time.

Tutoring Experience

I have had extensive experience in KS2:
Year 6- 2 years,
Year 5- 4 years,
Year 4- 4 years
Year 3- 2 years
I have also tutored year 5 children for 4 years focusing on maths and English and students have had excellent progress with me.
I have worked with children in KS1 focusing on phonics and reading skills.

Tutoring Approach

When I first work with a child I like to assess what level they are at and work on filling the gaps of things they do not know or understand, I have used different assessment papers and tests to assess the children's levels and understanding. It is best to keep sessions an hour/one and half hours max, with short breaks, and change up the activities. Such as in an English session we could cover reading skills along with grammar. In maths focus on arithmetic and go further into reasoning or times tables.
I work on the thought of ''see one, do one, teach one,'' My approach is firm but fair. Children need to understand why they are doing certain things not just know how to do them. When they can explain the process to someone else and show them how to do it, it shows they have grasped what the concept is. But children also need to have fun whilst they are learning and understand why they are learning it and how it will benefit them. If they don't see when they would use a certain thing in maths in real life they do not see the point.
