Not meaning to wax poetic cliché, but, for me, education is enriching to the lives of all students privileged to experience it. It nourishes their souls, it enables their lives to be lived in a broader and more meaningful sense, it allows them to better understand themselves and one another (and perhaps in so understanding better able to care for themselves and others). Education of this sort in itself may not change the world; it will, however, change the person, the people, who will go on to change the world. I hope to be the source of such a change, and in turn be so changed myself.
I have taught as a formally selected online and personal tutor for two years in addition to being involved as an interim teacher for more than seven years in English on a post-secondary level. During my time as a postgraduate student, I taught on the university level as an assistant lecturer as part of the responsibilities of my bursary funding and was certified in LTHE (Learning and Teaching in Higher Education).
Further to this, I have aided students on both the secondary and post-secondary levels in a wide assortment of subjects, the most preparing for GCSE and A-Level exams. This has spanned a repertoire from Shakespeare – Hamlet, As You Like It, and Twelfth Night – to contemporary and classic literature – The Handmaid’s Tale, Jane Eyre, Frankenstein – to studies in politics and English proficiency.
In my time as an educator, one of the feelings that awards me the greatest satisfaction is the sensation felt when truly connecting with students, seeing the material being taught resonate with and being assimilated into their character, and in observing their blossoming as individuals through engagement with their studies. My approach is one that initially assesses the level on which the pupil is currently operating and tailoring his or her studies to ensure growth from that point.
